Pedestal Grinders

  1. Severe injury may occur if proper protective equipment is not used and properly maintained.
  2. Check the tool rest for the correct distance from the abrasive wheel, maximum 1/8” or 3mm.
  3. Replace the grindstone when adjustment of the rest cannot provide 1/8 or 3mm.
  4. If the wheel has been abused and ground to an angle or grooved, reface the wheel with the appropriate surfacing tool.
  5. Protect your eyes with goggles or a face shield at all times when grinding.
  6. Before commencing grinding, allow the grinding wheel to run at operating speed for a least one minute.
  7. Vibrating wheels should not be used. They must be dressed or replaced or the bearings of the shaft replaced if they are worn.
  8. Shut off the power and do not leave until the wheel has come to a complete stop.
  9. When commencing a grinding operation, bring the object into contact with the grinding wheel slowly and smoothly avoiding impact or bumping motions.
  10. Each time a grinding wheel is mounted: the maximum approved speed stamped on the wheel bladder should be checked against the shaft rotation speed of the machine to ensure the safe peripheral speed is not exceeded. A grinding wheel must not be operated at peripheral speed exceeding he manufactures recommendation.
  11. The flanges supporting the grinding wheel should be a maximum of 1/3: the diameter of the wheel, and must fit the shaft rotating speed according to the manufacturers recommendation.
  12. Bench grinders are designed for face grinding. Do not grind on the side of the wheel.
  13. Do not stand directly in front of grinding wheel when it is first started.
